Taken together, I do find Ayn Rand's writings--both her fiction and her nonfiction--to be inspiring, that is, adding fuel to my motivation to live the longest, fullest life than I can build.

The characters of The Fountainhead--ranging from Howard Roark to Steve Mallory--are inspiring on a very personal level. Her call to action in the title essay of her manifesto, For the New Intellectual, is inspiring because it makes the context clear for our milieu and because it shows that the "new intellectuals" of Objectivism, in whatever field they are working, can change their world for the better. And the latter is the essence of life: taking action to sustain and improve life.

I never used the word glorious. I do admire and respect Ballmer, chiefly because of his attitude and approach to life. Alongside Jack Welch, he's one of the most successful CEOs in the modern era and has created a tremendous amount of value. On average, the company makes $1,9000 every second. At the concrete level somewhere in the globe a bunch of people are deciding they'd rather have a piece of Microsoft software because their life is better in some way than having $1,900 of heard earned cash. That's a big compliment.

I haven't read Rand for several years now. My recollection of reading her writing is feeling a sharp sense of clarity and also enjoyment. It wasn't especially inspiring and it certainly didn't make me feel small.

Your post on Steve Ballmer misses the point of Objectivism completely. Yes, he may fit some of the characteristics of the heroes in Rand's writing, but why--may I ask--do you take the position you do? Where does your motivation come from to glorify someone like Steve Ballmer as a hero? When you read Rand's writing, do you feel empowered/inspired, or small and inadequate?

"A record level of success being achieved in business, and observed for what it is by the man without guilt or shame."

Well said, Kevin! And indeed, the enthusiasm he brings to the end of the company meeting is contagious..you want to go back to work, and change the world.
